Bible Reading: Genesis 20-23

So the field and the cave were transferred from the Hittites to Abraham for use as a permanent burial place (Genesis 23:20)

Today’s reading is filled with famous narratives, most notably the near-sacrifice of Isaac. It is fascinating to me that an entire chapter is devoted to the purchase of a burial place for Sarah. An entire conversation filled with bartering is preserved for us to read.

One of the many things that leads me to believe that the Bible is authentic is chapters such as Genesis 23. The details are clear and seemingly insignificant. Abraham paid full price for burial land. No coupons. No sale. Two verses describe Sarah’s death while eighteen tell of the property purchase. If I were to write the Bible (rather than God) I would definitely reverse the proportions! There are aspects of the Bible that are not impressive, yet they reveal the inspiration of God and a fact-filled account for the ages.

LORD, thank You for Your Word. Thank You for revealing truth, not only in the Bible but also in Jesus, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Help me to appreciate the mundane details as well as the soaring narratives, the genealogies as well as the poetry. It is all from You and carefully preserved for us. Your Word truly is a lamp for our feet and a light for our path. Thank You for leading and guiding us. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
