Bible Reading: Exodus 19-21

The LORD said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.” Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said.

Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently, and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him. (Exodus 19: 9, 18-19)

You would think that an encounter with the Almighty such as the event on Mount Sinai would create a lifelong faith in God and in Moses. After all, the LORD did what He said He would do and revealed His presence through a multimedia extravaganza! Amazingly, it would not be long before the people would fail to trust Moses and the LORD.

Some have said that they would believe in God if they could only see Him. I disagree. The people of Israel saw God’s power displayed through the Passover, the parting of the Red Sea, and this display of sight and sound, yet they were unfaithful to God. Many people saw Jesus—before, during, and after the Cross—and rejected Him. I must guard against making promises to God—particularly when I want something from God.

LORD, I believe. Help me in my unbelief. Please don’t ever allow me to run from You or lose my faith. Remind me of the countless times in which You have demonstrated Your presence and power to me, deepening my trust in You. Thank You for guiding the people in the wilderness…and for guiding me today. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
