Bible Reading: Exodus 29-32

“See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts.

When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God. (Exodus 31:2-3, 18)

It is not uncommon for an artist to sign their work. Whether or not their initials or signature are visible, there is a part of the artist in each of their creations. I love reading about Bezalel and his assistant, Oholiab. They were commissioned by God create masterpieces. Later in Exodus 31, we read that God Himself inscribed the tablets with His finger. That is the ultimate autograph!

I marvel at the creativity displayed by architects, painters, sculptors, composers, dancers, poets, writers, and other artists. They undoubtedly reflect through their craft the art of God, the ultimate Artist. The detail with which God commissioned Bezalel and others is remarkable. The Artist continues to lead, guide, direct, inspire, and instruct artists today, allowing them to leave their—and ultimately His—mark on the world.

Awesome God, the great Artist, I marvel at Your works in creation. I am awed by the accounts in Exodus of the detailed instructions You provided to Bezalel and other craftsmen. I am particularly struck by the thought of You inscribing the Ten Commandments with Your finger. I pray that my life would reflect Your image. I long for people to confuse me with Jesus (as ridiculous as that sounds!). I want Your autograph written upon my heart…and life. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
