Bible Reading: Leviticus 1-4

He shall remove all the fat, just as the fat is removed from the lamb of the fellowship offering, and the priest shall burn it on the altar on top of the offerings made to the LORD by fire. In this way the priest will make atonement for him for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven. (Leviticus 4:35)

Just as Exodus expresses God’s detailed instructions regarding the construction of the tabernacle and its objects, so Leviticus records God’s specifications for sacrifices. Some are unpleasant to read, yet each has a purpose. The bloody work of the priests is yet another reminder to appreciate the ultimate sacrifice of the Lamb of God, our high priest, Jesus Christ.

As a pastor/priest, I am glad that my work is not as messy as that of Old Testament priests! I’m also struck by how the various sacrifices atoned for the sins of the Israelites.

Jesus, our great high priest, thank You for making atonement for all of our sins—past, present and future. Thank You for these pages of details that remind us of Your care and concern for us, our salvation, and forgiveness. Thank You for the cross…and the empty tomb!
