Bible Reading: Leviticus 5-7

The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat of the fellowship offerings on it. The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out. (Leviticus 6:12-13)

In the midst of the graphic descriptions of the various sacrifices (much to the horror of PETA!), these two verses (the command is repeated in case it was missed the first time!) declare that the fire on the altar “must not go out.” This must have been quite a sight in the daytime, but incredible at night. It makes me think of the eternal flames in Arlington National Cemetery.

Who needs a night light when God appeared as fire by night and the altar was kept burning  24/7? It must have been difficult for the people of Israel to forget God, the Light of the Word (yet they did!).

Light of the World, thank You for shining Your light on us, both Your created sun and the presence of the Holy Spirit. May You burn brightly in and through my life, despite my sins and weaknesses. I want to burn for You. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
