Bible Reading: Numbers 33-36

Do not defile the land where you live and where I dwell, for I, the LORD, dwell among the Israelites.’” (Numbers 35:34)

I can only imagine the awe and wonder that filled the hearts of the Israelites, knowing that the LORD dwelt among them. The land was special, for it was not only the Promised Land, but also the place where the presence of God lived.

The curtain of the temple was torn in two when Jesus died on the cross. Since then—and especially since the arrival of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2—the presence of God is no longer restricted to one geographical location (if that were ever truly the case; God is omnipresent). However, many claim that they sense the presence of God in an extra special way in certain places, particularly in Israel. Regardless, Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you” in Luke 17:21. Perhaps an update of Numbers 35:34 would read, “Do not defile your mind, body and soul for that is where I, the LORD, dwell.”

LORD, I am reminded that You are alive and You dwell in me. I don’t want any impure thoughts, actions, or attitudes to fill this temple. I want You, Your presence, Your love, and Your power to be alive in me, blessing others and glorifying You. Forgive me for the countless times this temple has not been pure and holy as You expect. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
