Bible Reading: Deuteronomy 4-7

Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you. (Deuteronomy 6:3)

The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today. And if we are careful to obey all this law before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.” (Deuteronomy 6:24-25)

In today’s four chapters, the word “obey” is used twenty two times in the New Living Translation. God is abundantly clear that the path to a satisfying life is found in obeying His commands. It sounds so simple, yet all of us—from Adam and Eve to every human on the planet today—struggle to follow His instructions.

To obey is better than sacrifice (1 Samuel 15:22). I sometimes reflect upon how different our world would be if we all obeyed the LORD’s commands. It would seem to be awfully close to heaven on earth. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone always spoke the truth in love, submitted their wills to God, treated others as they wanted to be treated, and avoided all theft, greed, and pride? No wonder Jesus was the ultimate human being—He obeyed completely. He modeled the way life was meant to be lived.

LORD, I love to fantasize about a sinless world, but the truth is that I need not go far to find people who disobey Your commands. I see one every day in the mirror. Give me the passion, vision, courage, discipline, and strength to obey…always. I want Your favor and blessing. I want to live long and prosper. I need Your help and the power of the Holy Spirit to resist temptation and obey all of Your commands. Most of all, I want You. I want to know You. I want to love You. Thank You for Your grace, mercy and love. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
