Bible Reading: Joshua 3-6

Scripture -Joshua  3 –  15 Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, 16 the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (that is, the Dead Sea)

Joshua 4 18 And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before.

Joshua 5 13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”  14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence…

Joshua 6  20 When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city.

Observation –  What we have here is the ascension of Joshua as leader of the Israelites through the epic crossing of the Jordan River.   As the priest entered the Jordan, the waters dried up and once again the Israelites were able to cross over on dry ground, just as Moses had parted the Red Sea.  The knowledge of God doing these miracles on the part of Israel caused the enemies that they encountered to lose confidence even before the fighting had begun.  And then the famed military strategy that every Sunday School student knew by heart….” and the walls came tumbling down.”  All of this showed that God’s favor and spirit was on Joshua.

Application –  How often do we grumble about what God sets before us.  How often do we question God  in what he is doing or how he is moving only because we don’t see the world as he does.  Help us to have faith to cross the “Jordan’s” before us.  Help us to know that the Lord will keep our feet “dry” and that he can conquer any foe that comes up against us.

Prayer – Lord help us be able to hear you, and have faith in you that you will supply our every need.  Help us to hear your voice and help us follow your direction.  Help us to step out into the raging floods and know that you will make ground dry that you call us to stand on.  Help us to follow your direction so that in the Jerichos that we face “… the walls will come tumbling down…”
