Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 4-8

So they called together all the rulers  of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it  will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. Those who did not die  were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven. (1 Samuel 5:11-12)

The ark—not Noah’s ark, but the ark of the covenant—was more than just an object. It contained the presence of God. When people touched it, they died. When it was in the hands of the wrong people, it filled with city with death and panic. At one time the Philistines wanted the ark, then they couldn’t wait to get rid of it, offering gifts of gold (6:4) along with its return.

The presence of God is not to be taken lightly. When God makes a promise, He keeps it. There is a reason that we can’t see God with our limited, human eyes. Don’t mess with the Almighty!

Awesome God, You are indeed awesome and worthy of all honor, respect, awe, and obedience. You are more than just my “co-pilot” or buddy. You are the sovereign Creator of all things. While I can’t wait to see You face to face, it is obvious I’m frail flesh is neither worthy nor able to do so. I long for heaven and a new, resurrected body that will witness Your tangible presence, free from temptation, sin and death. Until then, I will proclaim Your greatness and majesty and fear You, the only One we are to fear. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
