Bible Reading: 1 Chronicles 3-5

They waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur,  Naphish and Nodab. They were helped in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because they cried out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted  in him. They seized the livestock of the Hagrites—fifty thousand camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep and two thousand donkeys. They also took one hundred thousand people captive, and many others fell slain, because the battle  was God’s. And they occupied the land until the exile. (1 Chronicles 5:19-22)

Two and one half tribes waged war against four groups. Despite having nearly 45,000 “capable warriors,” the real secret to their success was that “they were helped” by God “in fighting them” because they “cried out to him during the battle.” Tragically, these victors were taken as captives a few verses later because “these tribes were unfaithful to the God of their ancestors” (verse 25).

I love the phrase in verse 22, “the battle was God’s.” I want to be on God’s side. Always!

Victorious God, I praise and thank You for Your power. Thank You for never abusing Your power. There is truly none like You. The Bible is filled with accounts of both favorites and underdogs winning when You fought with and/or for them. I can’t imagine being against You, yet I know my sin is always opposed to You. May I never be like these tribes and become unfaithful to You. I never want to worship other gods. I want to follow You all the days of my life. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
