Bible Reading: 1 Kings 15:25-16:34; 2 Chronicles 17

Scripture  29 In the thirty-eighth year of Asa king of Judah, Ahab son of Omri became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria over Israel twenty-two years. 30 Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him. 31 He not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, but he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him. 32 He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria. 33 Ahab also made an Asherah pole and did more to arouse the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel, than did all the kings of Israel before him.  1 King 16 29-33

The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David before him. He did not consult the Baals but sought the God of his father and followed his commands rather than the practices of Israel. The Lord established the kingdom under his control; and all Judah brought gifts to Jehoshaphat, so that he had great wealth and honor. His heart was devoted to the ways of the Lord; furthermore, he removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah.  2 Chronicles 17:3-6

Observation  –  What we see through the passage in 1 Kings is the wrong way to go about pleasing the Lord.  1 King 15-16 is full of  King after King and family after family that rose and fell.  Families were utterly destroyed because of the sin they continued to commit.  1 King 16 ends with Ahab, who sinned greater than all the Kings that came before and stirred the Lord to Great Anger.

Contrast that to the reign of Jehoshafat in 2 Chronicles who chose to follow the ways of his father David.  Where the Kings that sinned were destroyed as the result of sin, Jehoshafat was blessed by God and all of Judah.

Application –  I guess when it comes down to it, its all about choices. We can choose to follow the Lord and do his will, or we can choose by the free will that he gave us…. to sin and seek our own will.  The choice is ours to make.  But choosing wrong could be disatrous

Prayer –  Dear Lord thank you for giving us the freedom of our will.  Now Lord help our will to be your Will.  Bless us Lord as you did Jehoshafat and keep us from sin…   Amen.
