Bible Reading: Joel 1-3

Despair, you farmers,
wail, you vine growers;
grieve for the wheat and the barley,
because the harvest of the field is destroyed. (Joel 1:11)
“Even now,” declares the LORD,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
Rend your heart
and not your garments.
Return to the LORD your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.
Who knows? He may turn and relent
and leave behind a blessing—
grain offerings and drink offerings
for the LORD your God. (Joel 2:12-14)

63% of the continental United States is in the midst of a drought. Joel’s readers were also in the midst of a drought. God sought repentance from the people, reminding them that He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.

Perhaps we should return to the LORD, fast, weep, and mourn. Our land certainly needs help—in so many ways.

LORD, please heal our land. I have prayed this so many times, both privately and via this Scio Journal. We are clearly headed in the wrong direction, abandoning You and Your Word seemingly more each day. I pray that my life would be an example to others, though I fall SO short. Fill me, Holy Spirit, with Your presence, power, gifts, and fruit. Bring spiritual awakening to our nation, LORD. Let it begin with me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
