Bible Reading: Jeremiah 38-40, Psalm 74, 79

When the commander of the guard found Jeremiah, he said to him, “The Lord your God decreed this disaster for this place.  And now the Lord has brought it about; he has done just as he said he would.  All this happened because you people sinned against the Lord and did not obey him.”  (Jeremiah 40:2-3)

The scripture reading today is full of the details that lead up to the fall of Jerusalem.  Chapter 39, even before the first verse, gives the preamble “This is how Jerusalem was taken”   We’ve read all along that God was going to pour out his wrath.  God sent Prophet after prophet and the people mistreated them for the bad news they brought.  The people lived  under the knowledge that God would, in the fullness of time, do what he said he would.

Though today’s lesson is  from 586 B. C. it’s the same God who speaks to us today.  He said he would come again.   We’ve had our share of modern prophets reminding us that God won’t put up with sin.  How do we respond?

Lord, please help me reach the people around me.   Let my life reflect my belief that you will do what you say you will do.  Amen
